Takeover is a film about the Young Lords’ historic occupation of Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx in 1970. The Young Lords, originally from Chicago before starting a chapter in New York, was a group that aimed to fight for neighborhood empowerment and self-determination for Puerto Rico, Latinos, and colonized people. On July 14, 1970, members of the organization barricaded themselves inside the facility for 12 hours demanding cleaner, safer, and more accessible conditions for the community. It worked. The film covers the inspiring story of the Young Lords and the thoughtfulness and care they employed to ensure the state followed through on building a new hospital for El Barrio in the Bronx.
